What did European men wear?

A mans first piece of clothing was a braies. Braies are like a loose pair of boxers. There was no elastic in braies, so they were held up with a leather belt or a long shoe lace. The braies were knee length or longer, the next layer is a hose, and yes they are like pantie hose. The hose were made of woolen cloth. Over the braies and hose a man wore a linen shirt and wore a long tunic. Both men and women wore pointed shoes.

What did European women wear?

Noble women's tunics and bliauds stayed long through the Middle Ages. Bliauds are fitted gowns. Sometimes women's sleeves were so tight they had to be resown every time they wore their dresses. They wore linen veils, the veils were usually coiled or braided. Women wore a cloth around their neck called a barbet. The barbets were held up with pins. Ladies fashion was to wear tall headdresses or hats. I wonder if anyone broke their neck from wearing those big headdresses? Women wore a piece of cloth around their torso; women didn't wear underwear just simpily a long shirt.

What was men and women clothing made of?

Fabric was made from natural fibers, sometimes they used cotton but it was to hard to spin into thread. Cotton was usually used for stuffing. Linen was used to make inner garments; wool was made for outer garments. The linen was like Under Armor today because it keeps you cool in the hot weather. Wool was used to hold the colors of the outfit and kept them warm.

What costumes did people wear?

Traditional costumes were worn at European kings and queens coronations. The elected doge of the republic of Venice wore silk, damask, and cloth of gold. The doge wore a horn shaped cap, then a crown. That must of looked weird! Every year the doge would throw his official ring into the sea to symbol "marriage" between Venice and the sea. What colors and materials men and women wore to thewedding represented something about them. Like the woman in this picture (left) is wearing a green dress because she is Italian and the man is wearing brown because he is a patron. Patrons paid artist to paint pictures of them in the latest fashion, even Bibical subjects were painted in costume. WOW their paintingsr look almost like a picture but I would rather take a picture than stand still for HOURS!
